RARKPK Film Review: Ranveer, Alia are first rate in this colorful emotional romance

There are a lot of fans who are lamenting that Bollysiblood is not what it used to be. Faith Karan Johar to restore the charm of the late 90s or early 2000s with a film like Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The director who is back in the director’s chair after eight years navigates a love story through the generations with his usual gift for showcasing the lives of rich crazy Indians. It is a celebration film for Dharma Productions, and definitely one that brings joy from the audience. Loaded with emotion, melodrama, and music, rarkpk is told in Bollysipood’s timeless tradition of combining narrative and music. What is it about

Rocky Randhapora (Ranveer Singh) is on the hunt for Jamini (Shabana Azmi) who can help his partially bedridden grandfather regain some of his memory. On his quest, he meets her niece Rani Chatterjee and they fall in love. But like any desi couple, they know that Indian marriages are quite dependent on rear-drive. Finding acceptance from their families is a monumental task as they are as diverse as chalk and cheese. Will love finally overcome these obstacles and end that dream? What’s Hot

Rarkpk scores highly on its entertainment value. With its color, richness, sets and fire it’s a big-screen movie. Not only visual, the film is filled with romance, music, drama, and funny lines that will make you laugh, roar, and cheer for the characters all the time. Ranveer Singh as Rocky Randha! is stellar. The character is as loud as it can be. In the hands of a lesser actor it would have ended up as a mockery, but he fills it with warmth, charm and extraordinary love. You’ll want someone to simp on you like Rocky does for Rani. Alia Bhatt is almost perfect as educated, sophisticated South Delhi Bong Rani Chatterjee. They have terrific chemistry as their love story blossoms and their hungry kisses will make you blush. The trio of Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Dharmendra are fantastic. While the ladies are gorgeous, Dharmendra Springs a big surprise (we won’t reveal it!). The actors of Anjali Anand, Kshitee Jog, Churni Ganguly and Tota Roy Choropoldhury are in good form. Tota Roy Chorivdhury puts on a nuanced performance as Alia Bhatt’s sensitive, progressive and artistic father. The film was written by Shashank Khaitan, sumit Roy and Ishita Moitra. Moitra’s dialogues are incredibly creative. Production designer Amrita Mahal Nakai has created a world of wealth full of art, sophistication and character. While the music may not be on par with Ae dil hai Mushkil or Kabhi Alvida Na kehna, it’s certainly not a disappointment. The sound of the songs is pretty good.

Karan Johar shows us why he is the master of love stories. The subtext of the film is extensive. From unwittingly conditioned patriarchy to nullifying the roles of culture and gender, the film addresses everything head-on. The questions posed in the film are relatable and will make you think. Rocky Aur Rani Kii prem Kahaani is a film that is more than bubblegum’s millennial romance. Compared to the best works of this as My Name Is Khan. Compared to many Bollyanair movies, they have refrained from making a cartoon of Bengal.

What isn’t

The second half is pretty predictable. It would not be wrong to say that it plays like a daily soap drama. The movie could have been a little shorter. These are small gripes.

Decision

Karan Johar is back with a bang. Rocky Aur Rani Kii prem Kahaani is a film in the style of Bollysipood. Ranveer Singh has proven why he is one of the best. Alia Bhatt has another stellar act and potential blockbuster under her belt. Kudos to the whole team!
