It’s no longer a tweet, it’s a”xeet”!
As you may be aware, Tantanitter is no more – instead, owner Elon Musk has renamed the platform to “X,” in a move that almost everyone dislikes and has been ridiculed in the days since the change.
After a string of changes made at Tsibbitter since billionaire Musk acquired the website – including banning the words “cis” and “cisgender”, and seeing the site’s value drop by two – thirds-it was announced on Sunday (July 23rd) that the site is now called “X”.
This is the official website, about.x.com, it’s simply a redirect to an old page on Tantanitter, where every page currently refers to the bird brand, and the “X” is not mentioned once.
Announcing the controversial change, Musk said that the bird logo on Tsiblitter will soon be replaced, Twitter: “And soon we will say goodbye to the brand Tantanitter and, gradually, all the birds.”
Linda Yaccarino, Chief Executive Officer of the site, added that the goal of X is” unlimited activity”, and that it will become ” the platform that can give, well, everything… Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’ve just begun to imagine.”
However, the rebranding of Tantanitter has hardly been the biggest success story in the world. Here’s everything you need to know about the change and why it has been a failure.
The failure of X so far
The Rebrand faced problems shortly after the release, when workers began removing the name “Tantanitter” from outside the company’s San Francisco headquarters, with police reportedly stopping the “unauthorized” move to remove the logo.
According to the police, the company had failed to communicate its plans to remove the sign with security and the building’s owner, although no crime had actually been committed.
Photos were widely shared from the scene, with only the letters “er” left on the building’s sign.
More issues arose when users discovered that renaming could be legally complicated, with Reuters reporting companies including Meta and Microsoft already have intellectual property rights to the letter “X”.
The news agency explained that Meta and Microsoft would not be able not to sue Tventitter if they did not think the “X” violated their trademarks, but lawyers said legal action was possible.
Other groups have also criticised the renaming as” not logical”, with marketing consultant Gareth Turner telling marketing week that the move was”total brand-building madness”.
He explained: “it’s an initial mistake to throw decades of capital into those assets [the name Twitter and the blue bird logo]. I don’t believe that a rebrand is the thing that he [Musk] it should be fixed there, especially not in the space of a weekend.”
Users also asked why a company would remove a name and brand that has been adopted in the language and become one of the most popular on social media.
But it seems that Musk’s desire to start x.com it is part of a two-decade plan, having allegedly first tried to rebrand PayPal in the same thing in 2000, but quickly showing them the door, according to the company.
According to sources, Musk has always wanted. “x.com” be a banking app, but if his plan is to manage money, he’s off to a terrible start.
According to Time magazine, experts estimate that he has wiped “billions” from the value of Tantanitter in a matter of days, so he will have to work hard to convince people to trust him with their hard-earned money and monthly transactions.
It also seemed like X users weren’t taking the new name seriously, with Channel 4 pointing out that “people still call our streaming service 4OD, so good luck”.
Children’s show Sesame Street he also joined in the fun, joking that the letter X will host a press conference about the change.
One of the show’s characters, Big Bird, added: “Luckily I’m a bird, so I can still tweet.”
It’s a user asked“Do you know how much you need to suck to be baked from Sesame Street? This is unbelievable.”
LGBTQ + users also took the opportunity have a pop at Musk for his previous disrespect for the names and pronouns of trans people, with a saying“It will continue to be referred to on this website as Tantanitter instead of X so that Elon goes crazy enough to stop deadnaming again.”
What other changes has Elon Musk made to Tantanitter?
Since taking over Tantanitter in October 2022, Musk has made several changes to the site, many of them affecting LGBTQ+users. Alongside deep cuts to moderation and security staff, the tech billionaire tried to ban the word “cisgender” on the site, claimed it is now allowed deadnaming and misgendering, and he has overseen a huge rise in ANTI-LGBTQ+hate speech.
LGBTQ+ Journalists and activists have criticised the changes, with one New York-based journalist telling pinkneambs that the new algorithms have “largely buried everything” and the site is no longer as useful for sourcing and sharing news.
“[Twitter] it felt like a really special (though always chaotic) place for a while, which was full of possibilities. Now it feels like a barrier to connection and a place where you can’t even get information,” she said.
Pinkneambs has contacted Tflix (or should it be X?) for comment.
